Immunisations are always given when there is a doctor on the premises. We prefer to give children's vaccinations and immunisations in the morning.

Private Services

Some services are not covered under the NHS and the appropriate charge will be made. These include: private medical certificates, medical examinations (HGV/PSV licences, taxi drivers, seat belt exemption certificates, sporting activities e.g. sub aqua), reports for third parties (e.g. employers, insurance companies), statement of facts (e.g. shotgun licence applications) and medication and vaccinations required in connection with travel abroad.

If you are unfortunate enough to have been involved in a road traffic accident and you have not already seen another GP or been to hospital, a fee is payable. This is currently £21.30.

Clinics

ANTE NATAL
Ante Natal care is offered by both Doctors. The District Midwife attends on Tuesday mornings. Times by appointment.

FAMILY PLANNING
Both Doctors hold the Family Planning Association certificate and offer a range of contraceptive services and advice. 

CERVICAL SCREENING
Cancer of the cervix can be prevented and all female patients between 25 and 65 years of age are advised to have regular tests. These tests are important because they can detect early signs of disease that can be easily treated. Testing is available by appointment, with one of the nurses and preferably on a Wednesday afternoon. A recall system is in place to remind you when your test is due. Results will be advised in writing.

MINOR SURGERY
A range of minor surgical procedures is available, including removal of cysts and warts, and insertion of hormone implants.

HEALTH SCREENING
Health screening for men and women is available on request. This includes counselling on cardiac prevention, cholesterol screening and blood pressure checks.

HEALTH VISITOR
The Health Visitor (telephone number 01787 223673) holds baby clinics at the St Peter's Church Hall every 2nd and 4th Tuesday, from 2.00 pm to 4.00 pm. Nappy changing facilities are available.

NEW PATIENTS
All newly registered patients are asked to book an appointment for a health check within three months of registering.

INFLUENZA (FLU) IMMUNISATION
This is usually available in October, by appointment, for patients at risk (particularly those over the age of 65, the infirm and those with heart disease, asthma or diabetes). Home visits are arranged for the housebound.

Foreign Travel

A leaflet is available detailing vaccinations required for foreign travel, and vaccinations required are available from the Practice Nurse. A charge is payable for any vaccination given which is not available on the NHS

If you require any vaccinations relating to foreign travel you need to complete the travel form which is available from Reception, and make an appointment with the practice nurse about a week after submitting it. 

The nurse will look through your records prior to your appointment and recommend what vaccinations and/or medication you may require. There is further information about countries and vaccinations required on the links below.

It is important to submit your form at least 7 weeks before you travel.

Some travel vaccines incur a charge.  This is because travel vaccination is not included in the services provided by the NHS.

Childrens' Immunisations

Vaccinations and Immunisations recommended by the Department of Health are given by the Practice Nurse during morning surgery. They may only be given when there is a doctor on the premises.

Please note:

The child must be accompanied by a parent or the legal guardian and
the child's personal health record book must be brought to the appointment
or the vaccination/immunisation will NOT be given.

MEASURES TO CONTROL A CHILD'S TEMPERATURE FOLLOWING IMMUNISATION

A rise in temperature sometimes occurs after any of the immunisations. This may occur in the first 24 to 48 hours, but in the case of MMR may occur about a week after the vaccination. If this occurs, follow the instructions below:

• Avoid over-wrapping and over-dressing
• Give extra clear fluids
• Paracetamol suspension (120mg in 5ml) e.g. Calpol, Disprol, may be given in the doses shown below to help bring down your child's temperature. Most products come with a double measuring spoon, a small spoon (2.5ml) at one end and a large spoon (5ml) at the other.

If your child's temperature persists please contact your doctor.

CHILD WITH A TEMPERATURE - ADDITIONAL ADVICE

The measures above will help you to bring your child's temperature down, to avoid a convulsion, and make the child feel better.

Note: You will not make your child worse if you take him or her in a pram or car to see the doctor. Sometimes the fresh air makes feverish children feel better.

A child develops a temperature in response to an infection. Usually the child will get over the infection without antibiotics. Most childhood infections are caused by viruses, which do not respond to antibiotics.

A few children, usually under five years old, will have a convulsion with a high temperature: the child suddenly shakes all over then becomes very still. The convulsion should subside in less than five minutes. Lie the child on its side and stay with him/her. Telephone the doctor.
